Jack Ashford is an American musician, composer, and actor. He is best known as a member of the Funk Brothers, the house band of Motown Records. He is also known for his work as a session musician, playing on many of the label's biggest hits. Ashford was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1934. He began playing music at an early age, learning to play the piano and drums. He moved to Detroit in the 1950s and began playing with local bands. In 1959, he joined the Funk Brothers, the house band of Motown Records. He played on many of the label's biggest hits, including "My Girl" by The Temptations, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye, and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Diana Ross. In addition to his work with the Funk Brothers, Ashford also worked as a session musician, playing on records by artists such as Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, and Stevie Wonder. He also composed and arranged music for Motown Records. In the late 1970s, Ashford left Motown and began working as a solo artist. He released several albums, including Jack Ashford's Natural Funk (1979) and Jack Ashford's Funkology (1981). He also composed music for films, including The Wiz (1978) and The Color Purple (1985). In the 2000s, Ashford returned to the music industry, touring with the Funk Brothers and appearing in the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002). He continues to perform and record music today.
