He also worked as a production designer on films such as The Robe, The Egyptian, and The Ten Commandments. In the 1950s, Smith worked as a production designer on films such as The King and I, The Ten Commandments, and The Big Country. He also worked as an art director on films such as The Diary of Anne Frank, The Nun's Story, and The Guns of Navarone. In the 1960s, Smith worked as a production designer on films such as Cleopatra, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and The Sand Pebbles.
