James Bevel was an American civil rights activist and leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He was a key strategist and tactician of the movement in the 1960s, helping to initiate and organize major nonviolent campaigns, including the Birmingham campaign, the Selma to Montgomery marches, and the March on Washington. He was also a minister, and a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Bevel was born in Itta Bena, Mississippi, the son of Illie and Dennis Bevel. He was raised in a rural area and attended segregated schools. He was inspired by the activism of his parents, who were active in the local church and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Bevel attended Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and then transferred to the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1956. In 1960, Bevel joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and was appointed as the director of direct action and civil disobedience. He was instrumental in organizing the Birmingham campaign, the Selma to Montgomery marches, and the March on Washington. Bevel was also a leader in the Poor People's Campaign, and was arrested numerous times for his activism. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996. Bevel died in 2008 at the age of 72.
