He is best known for his pioneering work in the field of medical informatics, which is the use of computers and information technology to improve the delivery of healthcare. Cimino received his medical degree from the University of Rochester in 1954 and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Rochester in 1957. He then went on to become a professor of medicine at the University of Rochester and the University of California, San Francisco. Cimino has been a leader in the field of medical informatics since the 1970s. He was the founding director of the National Library of Medicine's Division of Medical Informatics and the founding editor of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. He has also served as president of the American Medical Informatics Association and the International Medical Informatics Association. Cimino has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the American Medical Informatics Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 and the National Library of Medicine's Regents Award in 2006.
