James E. Burke is an American businessman who served as the CEO of Johnson & Johnson from 1976 to 1989. He is credited with transforming the company into a global healthcare leader. Burke was born on February 28, 1925 in Rutland, Vermont. He attended the University of Vermont and graduated with a degree in economics in 1947. Burke began his career at Johnson & Johnson in 1953 as a sales representative. He rose through the ranks and was appointed CEO in 1976. During his tenure, Burke implemented a number of changes that helped the company become a global leader in healthcare. He also oversaw the company’s response to the 1982 Tylenol poisoning crisis, which is widely regarded as a model of corporate crisis management.
