Jan Baalsrud was a Norwegian resistance fighter during World War II. He is best known for his daring escape from the Nazis in 1943, during which he trekked across the mountains of Norway and Sweden, and eventually made it to safety in neutral Sweden. Baalsrud was born in Oslo, Norway, on 13 December 1917. He was the son of a Norwegian diplomat and grew up in Norway and abroad. He joined the Norwegian military in 1940, and was stationed in northern Norway when the Germans invaded in April 1940. Baalsrud was part of a group of Norwegian resistance fighters who were sent to the northern part of Norway to sabotage German operations. In March 1943, the group was betrayed and attacked by the Germans. Baalsrud was the only one to escape, and he trekked across the mountains of Norway and Sweden, surviving on little food and shelter. He eventually made it to safety in neutral Sweden. Baalsrud was awarded the War Cross with Sword by the Norwegian government for his bravery and courage. He died in Oslo in 1988.
