Jan Zwartkruis was a Dutch politician and diplomat who served as a Member of the House of Representatives from 1959 to 1967 and as the Dutch Ambassador to the United Nations from 1967 to 1972. He was born in Elst, Netherlands on 18 February 1926. Zwartkruis studied law at the University of Utrecht and was a member of the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA). He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1959 and served until 1967. During his time in the House of Representatives, he was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Defence Committee. In 1967, Zwartkruis was appointed as the Dutch Ambassador to the United Nations. He served in this role until 1972. During his time as Ambassador, he was a member of the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly. After his time as Ambassador, Zwartkruis returned to the Netherlands and served as a professor of international law at the University of Amsterdam from 1972 to 1991. He also served as a member of the Dutch Council of State from 1991 to 1996. Zwartkruis passed away on 28 April 2021 at the age of 97.
