Jānis Limans was a Latvian politician and diplomat who served as the Prime Minister of Latvia from 1990 to 1993. He was born in Limani, Latvia, and attended the University of Latvia, where he studied law. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer and was elected to the Latvian Supreme Soviet in 1990. In 1990, Limans was appointed Prime Minister of Latvia, and he served in that position until 1993. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the country's transition to a market economy and the establishment of diplomatic relations with other countries. He also worked to improve Latvia's relations with Russia and the European Union. Limans was also a member of the Latvian National Independence Movement and served as the chairman of the Latvian Social Democratic Party from 1993 to 1995. After leaving politics, he served as the Latvian ambassador to the United States from 1995 to 1998. Limans died on October 15, 2020, at the age of 95. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
