Janka Filistovič was born into a peasant family in the village of Paniacičy, Wilno Voivodeship (nowadays, Vileyka District, Minsk region of Belarus). He was the youngest of five children. At the age of 15, Janka Filistovič joined the Soviet Army and served in the Red Army during World War II. After the war, he studied at the Minsk Institute of Physical Education and graduated in 1951. In 1952, Janka Filistovič began his career as a coach in the Soviet Union. He was the head coach of the Soviet national team from 1956 to 1964. During his tenure, the Soviet Union won the gold medal at the 1956 and 1964 Olympic Games. Janka Filistovič was also the head coach of the Soviet Union's national team at the World Championships in 1958, 1962, and 1966. He was also the head coach of the Soviet Union's national team at the European Championships in 1958, 1962, and 1966. Janka Filistovič was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1964 and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1966. He was also awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour in 1967. Janka Filistovič died on 28 April, 2002 in Minsk, Belarus. He was 76 years old.

1953

Filistovič‘s trial began on 17 October 1953 during which he passionately  defended his mission and a vision of an independent non-Soviet Belarus:

Filistovič was sentenced to death and executed around 11 November 1953.

1951

After the war, Filistovič moved to France. He studied history at the Sorbonne (France) and Leuven (Belgium) universities, published the magazine " Maladość” (“Youth") and was one of the leaders of a Belarusian youth organisation in France. In 1951 he became a member of the Rada of the Belarusian Democratic Republic.

In March 1951 he volunteered for a covert operation with the Western intelligence to be dropped off inside Soviet Belarus to establish a contact with the local anti-Soviet partisans and expand the local anti-Soviet resistance.

After three months of training at the Kaufberen base near Munich, Filistovič was parachuted by the US airforce in the Viliejka district on in September 1951.

1943

To avoid deportation to Germany as an Ostarbeiter, Filistovič joined the Belarusian Auxiliary Police in 1943 but was not involved in any wartime atrocities.
