Jayathri Samarakone is a Sri Lankan lawyer and diplomat who has served in various capacities in the Sri Lankan government. She was born on 18 September 1953 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. She is the daughter of the late Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the first female Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Samarakone studied law at the University of Colombo and was called to the Bar in 1979. She then worked as a lawyer in the Attorney General's Department and later as a legal advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1989, Samarakone was appointed as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United Nations. She was the first woman to hold this position. She served in this role until 1994. In 1995, Samarakone was appointed as the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. She served in this role until 1999. In 2000, Samarakone was appointed as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States. She served in this role until 2004. In 2005, Samarakone was appointed as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United Nations. She served in this role until 2009.
