Jean Aurenche was a French screenwriter and film director. He was born on 11 September 1904 in Pierrelatte, Drôme, France. He was the son of a schoolteacher and a farmer. He studied at the Lycée de Valence and the Lycée de Grenoble. Aurenche began his career as a journalist and critic for the newspaper L'Humanité. He then moved to Paris and began writing for the film industry. He wrote for the films of Jean Renoir, Marcel Carné, and Jacques Becker. He also wrote for the films of Luis Buñuel, Jean-Luc Godard, and François Truffaut. In the 1950s, Aurenche began directing his own films. He directed the films La Traversée de Paris (1956), Les Grandes Manoeuvres (1955), and La Vérité (1960). He also wrote the screenplay for the film La Grande Illusion (1937). Aurenche was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques. He was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1954 for his novel Les Grandes Manoeuvres.
