Jean Bach is an American director, writer, and producer. She is best known for her documentary film, A Great Day in Harlem, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1995. She has also directed and produced several other documentaries, including Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser and Jazz on a Summer's Day. Jean Bach was born on September 27, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois. She attended the University of Chicago, where she studied film and television. After graduating, she worked as a film editor for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). In the 1950s, Bach began directing and producing documentaries. Her first documentary, A Great Day in Harlem, was released in 1994 and was nominated for an Academy Award. The film tells the story of a group of jazz musicians who gathered in Harlem in 1958 for a photograph. Bach has also directed and produced several other documentaries, including Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser and Jazz on a Summer's Day.
