He is best known for his roles in films such as The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), The Last Metro (1980), and The Return of Martin Guerre (1982). Gardin began his career as an actor in the 1950s, appearing in films such as The Lovers of Montparnasse (1958) and The Longest Day (1962). He made his directorial debut in 1967 with the film The Bride Is Much Too Beautiful. Gardin has been married twice, first to actress Marie-Christine Barrault and then to actress Catherine Deneuve. He has two children, a son, actor Mathieu Gardin, and a daughter, actress Delphine Gardin. Gardin has won numerous awards for his work, including the César Award for Best Director for The Return of Martin Guerre in 1982. Gardin worked with the organizations UNESCO and the European Atomic Energy Community in the 1950s to the 1960s, leading the creation of an indexing language, the SYNTOL (Syntagmatic Organization Language). He founded the Centre Mécanographique de Documentation Archéologique at French National Center for Scientific Research in 1957. He participated in the excavation of ancient Bactrian sites in Afghanistan. He also contributed to the contemporary debates on the theory of archaeology and of the social sciences.
