Jean-Marc Hamel is a Canadian military officer and public servant. He was born on 19 February 1925 in Lotbinière, Quebec. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1943 and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. After the war, he attended the Royal Military College of Canada and graduated in 1950. He then served in the Royal Canadian Navy and was promoted to the rank of Commander in 1965. Hamel was appointed as the Chief of the Defence Staff in 1976 and served in that position until his retirement in 1980. During his tenure, he was responsible for the modernization of the Canadian Armed Forces and the implementation of the Canadian Forces Reorganization Act. Hamel was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1980 and was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross in 1981. He was also awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration in 1982.
