Bryson began her career in the late 1970s, releasing her debut album, Jeanie Bryson, in 1979. She has since released several more albums, including her most recent, I'm Here to Stay, in 2017. Bryson has collaborated with a number of notable musicians, including her father, Dizzy Gillespie, as well as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, and Stanley Clarke. She has also performed with the likes of Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. Bryson has been married twice, first to jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis and then to jazz saxophonist and composer Branford Marsalis. She has two children, Delfeayo and Jason, both of whom are musicians.
