He attended the University of Toronto and studied music theory and composition. After graduating, he moved to San Francisco and joined the Grateful Dead in 1971. He played with the band until their dissolution in 1995. Mayer has also released several solo albums, including his debut album, "Grateful Dawg," in 2001. He has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Bob Weir, David Grisman, and Phil Lesh. Mayer is currently married to his wife, Debra. He has two children, a son and a daughter.
