He is a four-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist, having won gold in the 200m butterfly at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and gold in the 200m individual medley at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England. Piper has also won numerous medals at the Australian Swimming Championships, including gold in the 200m butterfly in 2000 and 2004, and gold in the 200m individual medley in 2002. Piper is currently the head coach of the Australian Institute of Sport's swimming program. He is also a member of the Australian Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission. Piper is unmarried and does not have any children. He is currently living in Canberra, Australia.
