Jirí Svoboda is a Czech film director, screenwriter, and actor. He is best known for his work on the films The Ear (1970), The Joke (1969), and The Firemen's Ball (1967). Svoboda was born in Kladno, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) on 5 May 1945. He studied at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) from 1964 to 1969. Svoboda's first feature film, The Firemen's Ball, was released in 1967 and was a critical and commercial success. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968. Svoboda's other notable films include The Joke (1969), The Ear (1970), and The Little Mermaid (1973). He has also directed several television films and series, including the popular Czech sitcom, The Three Musketeers (1975-1977). Svoboda has been married twice and has two children. He currently resides in Prague.
