Joe Gordon (musician) was an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhornist. He was born on May 15, 1928 in Massachusetts. He began playing trumpet at the age of 12 and was soon playing in local bands. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music and then moved to New York City in 1950. Gordon was a member of the bands of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. He also recorded with Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Sonny Rollins. He was a featured soloist on the classic Miles Davis album, Kind of Blue. Gordon was known for his lyrical, melodic style of playing. He was also a composer and arranger, writing for the bands of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Gordon died on April 18, 1963, at the age of 35. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. At the time of his death, Gordon had an estimated net worth of $1 million. He earned most of his wealth from his career as a jazz musician. He also earned money from his work as a composer and arranger.
