Joel Grey is an American actor, singer, dancer, and photographer. He is best known for his role as the Master of Ceremonies in the Kander & Ebb musical Cabaret, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1973. He has also appeared in numerous films, television shows, and Broadway productions.
Grey was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Goldie (née Gruskovitz) and Mickey Katz, a Jewish actor, comedian, and musician. He began his career as a child actor in the early 1940s, and made his Broadway debut in 1945. He went on to appear in numerous Broadway productions, including the original production of Cabaret in 1966.
Grey has been married twice, first to Jo Wilder from 1958 to 1982, and then to actress/singer Jennifer Nairn-Smith from 1982 to present. He has two children, James and Jennifer.

Played two different characters who asked to be euthanized in two different medical dramas. In the 2009 episode of Private Practice "Nothing to Fear" he played Dr. Alexander Bell, a cancer patient who asked Pete to euthanize him. In the 2006 episode of House M.D. "Informed Consent" he played Ezra Powell, also a cancer patient who asked to be euthanized. Both characters also threatened to commit suicide if their wishes were not fulfilled.
