John A. Lomax was an American folklorist and musicologist who was born on September 23, 1867 in Goodman, Mississippi. He is best known for his work in collecting and preserving folk songs from the American South. He was the first to record the songs of Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Huddie Ledbetter. He was also the first to record the songs of the Carter Family. Lomax was a pioneer in the field of ethnomusicology, and his work helped to preserve and document the musical heritage of the United States. He was also a prolific writer, and his books, including Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads (1910) and Our Singing Country (1941), are still widely read today. Lomax died on January 26, 1948 in Austin, Texas. He was 80 years old.
