John Baring, 7th Baron Ashburton, is a British banker and peer. He was born on 2 November 1928, the son of Edward Charles Baring, 6th Baron Ashburton, and his wife, Mary Ethel Harcourt. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Baring began his career in banking in 1952, joining the family firm of Barings Brothers & Co. He was appointed a director in 1959 and became chairman in 1967. He was also a director of the Bank of England from 1969 to 1975. In 1975, Baring succeeded his father as the 7th Baron Ashburton. He was a member of the House of Lords from 1975 to 1999, when he retired from the House. Baring has been married twice. His first marriage was to Anne Louise Strutt in 1954, with whom he had two sons and a daughter. His second marriage was to Susan Mary Renwick in 1988. Baring is a member of the Garrick Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron. He is also a trustee of the National Gallery and a member of the Royal Company of Archers.
