He is best known for his roles in the films Gallipoli (1981), The Year of Living Dangerously (1982), and The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978). He has also appeared in numerous television series, including The Sullivans (1976–1978), A Country Practice (1981–1982), and All Saints (1998–2009). Bell was born in Maitland, New South Wales, Australia, and began his career in the theatre in the 1960s. He has since appeared in numerous stage productions, including the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of King Lear (1982). Bell has won numerous awards for his work, including the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978), and the Logie Award for Most Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for All Saints (1998).
