John Bury was a British theatre designer who was born on 27 January 1925 in London, England. He was best known for his work on the original production of the musical "Cats" in 1981. Bury studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London and began his career as a scenic artist in the 1950s. He worked on a number of productions in the West End and on Broadway, including "The Boy Friend" (1954), "My Fair Lady" (1956), and "Cabaret" (1966). In 1981, Bury designed the sets for the original production of "Cats" at the New London Theatre. His design was praised for its innovative use of space and its ability to create a sense of intimacy between the audience and the performers. Bury was also known for his work on the original production of "Les Misérables" in 1985. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Scenic Design for his work on the show. Bury died on 28 April 2013 at the age of 88. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. At the time of his death, Bury had an estimated net worth of $2 million. He earned most of his wealth from his career as a theatre designer.
