John Bury was a British theatre designer who was born on 27 January 1925 in London, England. He was best known for his work on the original production of the musical "Cats" in 1981. Bury studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London and began his career as a scenic artist in the 1950s. He worked on a number of productions in the West End and on Broadway, including "The Boy Friend" (1954), "My Fair Lady" (1956), and "Cabaret" (1966). In 1981, Bury designed the sets for the original production of "Cats" at the New London Theatre. His design was praised for its innovative use of space and its ability to create a sense of intimacy between the audience and the performers. Bury was also known for his work on the original production of "Les Misérables" in 1985. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Scenic Design for his work on the show. Bury died on 28 April 2013 at the age of 88. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. At the time of his death, Bury had an estimated net worth of $2 million. John was educated at Hereford Cathedral School. After serving in the Royal Navy during World War II, Bury pursued a variety of jobs before joining the Theatre Workshop. After a period working for Theatre Workshop under the direction of Joan Littlewood at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in London, in 1963 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, whose artistic director was then Peter Hall. In 1973 he followed Hall to the National Theatre Company, then still based at the Old Vic to become its Head of Design and an associate director. For Hall's Broadway production of Amadeus by Peter Shaffer, Bury was nominated for Tony Awards for scenery, costumes and lighting, and received the award for scenery and lighting.
