John Cannon (historian) is a British historian and academic. He was born on 8 October 1926 in London, England. He is best known for his work on the history of the British Empire and the British Commonwealth. Cannon studied at the University of Oxford, where he obtained a BA in Modern History in 1948 and a DPhil in 1954. He then taught at the University of Manchester from 1954 to 1965, before moving to the University of Leeds, where he was Professor of Imperial History from 1965 to 1991. Cannon has written extensively on the history of the British Empire and the British Commonwealth. His books include The Oxford History of the British Empire (1999), The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy (1988), and The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Empire (1996). He has also written several books on the history of the British Commonwealth, including The Oxford History of the British Commonwealth (2002) and The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Commonwealth (2005). Cannon is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Fellow of the British Academy. He is also a member of the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum Advisory Council. Cannon is 97 years old.

1976

In 1976 he was appointed Chairman of Modern History at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Dean of the Faculty of Arts in 1979. He was Pro Vice Chancellor from 1983 to 1986 and was also employed by the History of Parliament Trust. In recognition of his contribution to Education, he was appointed a CBE in 1985. He was vice-chairman of the University Grants Committee in the period till its abolition in 1990.

Cannon was educated at Hertford Grammar School where he gained a scholarship to Peterhouse, Cambridge, and gained his PhD at Bristol University (where he was appointed Lecturer in 1961 and Senior Lecturer in 1967 as well as Reader in 1970). During his time at Bristol, he also became involved in Radio Bristol when it was first aired and was Chairman from 1970 to 1974.
