John Carney is an American politician and businessman who served as the 74th Governor of Delaware from 2017 to 2021. He was born on January 23, 1958 in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1980 with a degree in economics. Carney began his career in public service in 1981, when he was appointed as the Deputy Chief of Staff to then-Governor Pete du Pont. He then served as the Secretary of Finance for the State of Delaware from 1983 to 1985. In 1985, he was appointed as the State Treasurer of Delaware, a position he held until 1992. In 1992, Carney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Delaware's At-Large congressional district. He served in the House for six terms, from 1993 to 2011. During his time in Congress, he served on the House Budget Committee and the House Financial Services Committee. In 2016, Carney was elected as the 74th Governor of Delaware. During his tenure, he focused on improving the state's economy, creating jobs, and investing in education. He also worked to reduce the state's budget deficit and improve the state's infrastructure.
