John Giles (athlete) is a 96-year-old retired British athlete who specialized in the put. He was born on 9 February, 1927 in London, England. Giles began his career as a professional athlete in the 1950s, competing in the British Amateur Athletics Association (BAAA) and the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA). He won the AAA National Championships in the put in 1956 and 1957, and was a member of the British team at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. Giles was also a member of the British team at the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales, where he won a bronze medal in the put. He also competed in the European Championships in 1958 and 1960, and the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1962. Giles retired from competitive athletics in the early 1960s and went on to become a coach and administrator. He was the coach of the British team at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, and was the president of the British Amateur Athletics Association from 1975 to 1979. Giles was inducted into the British Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. He is currently living in London, England.
