John L. Weinberg is an American banker and philanthropist. He is the former chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs, and the former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He was born on January 25, 1925 in Scarsdale, New York. Weinberg graduated from Princeton University in 1947 with a degree in economics. He then joined Goldman Sachs, where he worked for more than 40 years. He was named chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs in 1976, and served in that role until 1990. Weinberg was appointed chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission in 1993, and served in that role until 1995. He has also served on the boards of numerous companies, including American Express, AT&T, and the New York Stock Exchange. Weinberg is a noted philanthropist, and has donated millions of dollars to various causes, including education, healthcare, and the arts. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and has received numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002. Weinberg is currently 81 years old.
