John S. Chase is an American architect and educator. He was born on January 23, 1925 in Annapolis, Maryland. He is best known for his work in modernist architecture, particularly in the design of public housing projects. Chase graduated from the University of Maryland in 1948 with a degree in architecture. He then went on to earn a master's degree in architecture from Harvard University in 1950. Chase began his career as an architect in the 1950s, working on projects in the Washington, D.C. area. He was a founding member of the Washington Urban League and served as its president from 1956 to 1958. In the 1960s, Chase began to focus on public housing projects, designing several in the Washington, D.C. area. He also designed the first public housing project in the United States to be built with federal funds, the Langston Terrace Dwellings in Washington, D.C. In the 1970s, Chase began to focus on educational projects, designing several buildings for universities and colleges in the Washington, D.C. area. He also designed the first African-American owned and operated bank in the United States, the Industrial Bank of Washington, D.C. Chase has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the American Institute of Architects' Gold Medal in 1988 and the National Medal of Arts in 1994. Chase is currently 87 years old.
