John S. Watson (New Jersey politician) is a former New Jersey State Senator who served from 1972 to 1982. He was born in 1924 in New Jersey and attended Rutgers University. He was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1968 to 1972. Watson was a member of the Democratic Party and served as the Senate Majority Leader from 1978 to 1982. He was also a member of the New Jersey State Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. Watson was a strong advocate for civil rights and was a leader in the passage of the New Jersey Open Housing Act of 1977. He also sponsored legislation to create the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the New Jersey Clean Air Act. Watson was a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was also a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Watson is currently retired and lives in New Jersey. He is 72 years old.
