John Veneman was born on October 31, 1925 in Corcoran, California, U.S. He is a politician who served as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2001 to 2005. He was a member of the California State Assembly from 1966 to 1974 and a member of the California State Senate from 1974 to 1982. Veneman attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1947. He then attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1950. Veneman was a partner in the law firm of Veneman, Veneman, and Veneman from 1950 to 1966. He was a member of the California State Assembly from 1966 to 1974 and a member of the California State Senate from 1974 to 1982. Veneman was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2001 to 2005. He was responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Medicare prescription drug benefit and the No Child Left Behind Act. Veneman is currently a senior advisor at the law firm of Veneman & Veneman LLP. He is also a member of the board of directors of the California Health Care Foundation and the California Endowment.
