John West (theatre) is an Australian theatre historian and author. He was born on 7 March 1924 in Paddington, New South Wales, Australia. He is best known for his book, The History of Australian Theatre, which was published in 1975. West has had a long and distinguished career in the theatre. He began his career as an actor in the 1940s, appearing in a number of plays and films. He then moved into directing, producing, and writing for the stage. He was the artistic director of the Nimrod Theatre Company in Sydney from 1971 to 1975. West has written several books on the history of Australian theatre, including The History of Australian Theatre (1975), The Australian Theatre (1980), and The Oxford Companion to Australian Theatre (1984). He has also written several plays, including The Last of the Australians (1975) and The Golden Age (1977). West has been awarded several honours for his work in the theatre, including the Order of Australia in 1984 and the Australian Centenary Medal in 2001.
