Johnny Mercer was an American lyricist, songwriter, and singer. He wrote the lyrics to more than fifteen hundred songs, including standards such as "Moon River", "Days of Wine and Roses", "The Summer Wind", "Autumn Leaves", and "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe". He was also a co-founder of Capitol Records. Mercer was born in Savannah, Georgia, and raised in the coastal town of Brunswick, Georgia. He was the son of George Anderson Mercer and Lillian Elizabeth (née Hines) Mercer. He was of English, Scottish, and Irish descent. Mercer began his career as a songwriter in the 1930s, working for music publishers in New York City and Hollywood. He wrote the lyrics for dozens of songs for films and Broadway shows, including the Academy Award-winning song "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" from the 1946 film The Harvey Girls. Mercer was also a successful recording artist, releasing several albums and singles throughout his career. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971 and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1978. As of 2021, Johnny Mercer's net worth is estimated to be $10 million.
