Jonathan Demme is an American filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for directing the Academy Award-winning films The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Philadelphia (1993). He has also directed the films Something Wild (1986), Married to the Mob (1988), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Rachel Getting Married (2008), and Ricki and the Flash (2015). Demme was born in Baldwin, Long Island, New York, the son of Dorothy Louise (née Rogers) and Robert Eugene Demme, a public relations executive. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1965 with a degree in theater arts. Demme began his career as a director in the 1970s, directing the documentary film Citizens on Patrol (1977). He then directed the comedy film Handle with Care (1977). He then directed the drama film Melvin and Howard (1980), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Demme's other notable films include the horror film The Silence of the Lambs (1991), which won him the Academy Award for Best Director, the romantic comedy Something Wild (1986), the drama Philadelphia (1993), the biographical drama Rachel Getting Married (2008), and the musical drama Ricki and the Flash (2015).
