In 2009, he formed The Head and the Heart with Josiah Johnson, Charity Rose Thielen, Chris Zasche, Kenny Hensley, and Tyler Williams. The band released their self-titled debut album in 2011, which was a commercial success and earned them a Grammy nomination. Russell has released two solo albums, Light of Mine (2018) and The Lighthouse (2020). He has also collaborated with other artists, including Brandi Carlile, The Lone Bellow, and The Avett Brothers.
