José Carreras is a Spanish operatic tenor who has enjoyed a long and successful career. He is best known for his performances in the operas of Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart. He has also performed in musicals and operettas, and has released numerous recordings.
Carreras was born in Barcelona, Spain, on December 5, 1946. He began studying music at the age of eight, and made his professional debut at the age of 15. He went on to study at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona, and later at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Carreras made his operatic debut in 1969, and has since performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Royal Opera House in London. He has also performed in musicals and operettas, and has released numerous recordings.
In 1988, Carreras was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He underwent a successful bone marrow transplant in 1990, and has since become a prominent advocate for cancer research.
Carreras has been awarded numerous honors, including the Order of Isabella the Catholic, the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and the Order of the British Empire. He is also a member of the Royal Academy of Music in London.

In 1990, he made the acclaimed Three Tenors performance at the opening of the World Cup in Rome. It was originally planned as a fund-raiser for the Jose Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation.
