Josef Berne was a Russian-born film director, writer, and editor who worked in the Soviet Union and Germany. He is best known for his work on the classic Soviet films The Cranes Are Flying (1957) and Ballad of a Soldier (1959). Berne was born in Kiev, Russian Empire (now Ukraine) on 19 January 1904. He studied at the State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, graduating in 1929. He began his career as an editor and assistant director at the Mezhrabpom-Rus film studio in Moscow. Berne's first feature film as a director was the 1934 drama The White Eagle, which was followed by the 1936 comedy The Circus Princess. He then moved to Germany, where he directed the 1937 drama The Great Adventure. Berne returned to the Soviet Union in 1939 and worked as a director and editor at the Mosfilm studio. He directed several films during the 1940s and 1950s, including the 1946 drama The Unforgettable Year 1919 and the 1954 comedy The Girl from Leningrad. Berne's most acclaimed films were the 1957 drama The Cranes Are Flying and the 1959 war drama Ballad of a Soldier. Both films were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Berne died in Moscow on 15 April 1975.
