Timeline
Tobias began the 2019 season with Portland, spending several stints with the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox as well.
Tobias opened the 2018 season with Double-A Portland, where he hit .228 in 34 games and had two stints on the disabled list. In late July, he was sent on a rehabilitation assignment with the GCL Red Sox, and in early August was assigned to Class A-Advanced Salem. Overall during the 2018 season with three teams, Tobias batted .264 with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 70 games.
Tobias began his professional career with the Williamsport Crosscutters of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League. He batted .321 in 61 games for Williamsport, and was named the team's most valuable player. In 2016, he played for the Lakewood BlueClaws of the Class A South Atlantic League, and received a promotion to the Clearwater Threshers of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League. In 127 total games between Lakewood and Clearwater, he posted a .291 batting average with nine home runs and 69 RBIs.
After the 2016 season, the Phillies traded Tobias to the Boston Red Sox for Clay Buchholz. Tobias began the 2017 season with the Salem Red Sox of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League, and was promoted to the Portland Sea Dogs of the Double-A Eastern League on May 1. Tobias batted a combined .284 with five home runs and 45 RBIs between both clubs.
Tobias enrolled at the University of Florida, where he played college baseball for the Florida Gators. With Florida, Tobias was named to the Southeastern Conference's All-Freshman team in 2012. He appeared in the 2012 and 2015 College World Series. In 2012, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Yarmouth–Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League. The Philadelphia Phillies selected Tobias in the tenth round of the 2015 MLB draft.
Tobias attended Southeast Guilford High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. He had a .502 batting average with nine home runs, 29 runs batted in, and 41 stolen bases as a senior in 2011. The News & Record named Tobias their high school player of the year.
