Jovita Idar was a Mexican-American journalist, activist, and educator. She was born in Laredo, Texas, to a Mexican father and a Tejano mother. She was the first Mexican-American woman to become a professional journalist in the United States. Idar was a passionate advocate for the rights of Mexican-Americans and women. She was a leader in the Mexican-American civil rights movement, and she founded the League of Mexican Women in 1915. She also founded the newspaper La Crónica, which was the first Spanish-language newspaper in the United States. Idar was an outspoken critic of the Mexican Revolution and the Mexican government. She was also a strong advocate for women's rights, and she was a leader in the suffrage movement in Texas. Idar died in 1945 at the age of 60. She was posthumously inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1986.
