Joy Adamson was a naturalist, artist, and author best known for her book, Born Free, which was made into an Academy Award-winning movie. She was born Friederike Viktoria Gessner in Troppau, Silesia, Austria-Hungary (now Opava, Czech Republic) on January 20, 1910. Adamson was an animal lover from a young age, and she studied zoology and art at the University of Vienna. She married game warden and big-game hunter George Adamson in 1944, and the couple moved to Kenya in 1945. In 1956, the couple adopted an orphaned lion cub, which they named Elsa. They raised her and released her into the wild, and Adamson wrote a book about the experience, Born Free, which was published in 1960. The book was a bestseller and was made into an Academy Award-winning movie in 1966. Adamson wrote several other books about her experiences in Kenya, including Living Free (1961), Forever Free (1962), and The Spotted Sphinx (1966). She also wrote a book about her husband, George Adamson of Africa (1970). Adamson was killed in 1980 by a former employee. She was 70 years old.

A tireless campaigner for wildlife conservation, she was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 1977. Three years later, she was murdered by a discharged former employee.
