Juan Materno Vásquez de León is a Panamanian lawyer and politician who served as the President of Panama from 1984 to 1989. He was born on 14 September 1927 in Panama City, Panama. He studied law at the University of Panama and graduated in 1952. Vásquez de León was a member of the National Liberal Party and served as a member of the National Assembly from 1964 to 1968. He was appointed Minister of Government and Justice in 1968 and served until 1969. He was then appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and served until 1972. In 1984, Vásquez de León was elected President of Panama and served until 1989. During his presidency, he implemented a number of economic reforms and improved relations with the United States. He also oversaw the construction of the Panama Canal expansion project. Vásquez de León is currently 96 years old. He has a height of 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 m).
