Judd Hirsch is an American actor and comedian best known for his roles in the television series Taxi and Dear John. He has also appeared in films such as Ordinary People, Running on Empty, and A Beautiful Mind. Hirsch was born on March 15, 1935 in The Bronx, New York City, New York, USA. He is the son of Sally (Kitzis) and Joseph Sidney Hirsch, an electrician. He has a brother named Roland Hirsch. Hirsch attended DeWitt Clinton High School and then studied drama at New York University. He made his Broadway debut in 1961 in I Can Get It for You Wholesale. Hirsch's first major television role was in the sitcom Taxi, which ran from 1978 to 1983. He won two Emmy Awards for his performance as Alex Rieger. He also starred in the sitcom Dear John from 1988 to 1992. Hirsch has also appeared in numerous films, including Ordinary People (1980), Running on Empty (1988), and A Beautiful Mind (2001). He has also provided voice work for animated films such as Antz (1998) and The Wild (2006). Hirsch has been married twice. He was married to Bonnie Chalkin from 1960 to 1976 and to Mary Beth Rubens from 1982 to 1988. He has two children, Alex and David.
