Urquidi Illanes began her political career in the 1950s, when she was elected to the Bolivian Chamber of Deputies. She served in the Chamber until 1964, when she was appointed as Bolivia's ambassador to the United Nations. She was the first woman to serve in this role. In 1993, Urquidi Illanes was appointed as Vice President of Bolivia, making her the first female Vice President in the country's history. She served in this role until 1997. During her tenure, she was a strong advocate for women's rights and worked to improve the lives of Bolivian women.
