Julien Benda was a French philosopher, novelist, and essayist. He was born in Paris on December 26, 1867, and died in Paris on August 30, 1956. He was educated at the École Normale Supérieure and the Sorbonne. Benda is best known for his book La Trahison des Clercs (The Betrayal of the Intellectuals), published in 1927. In this book, he argued that intellectuals had betrayed their calling by becoming involved in politics and by taking sides in the political struggles of their day. He argued that intellectuals should remain aloof from politics and instead focus on the pursuit of truth and the defense of universal values. Benda was also a novelist and essayist. His works include La Vie de Socrate (The Life of Socrates, 1925), La Jeunesse de Goethe (The Youth of Goethe, 1929), and La Fin de l'Europe (The End of Europe, 1932). Benda was a member of the French Academy and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1951.
