Kauko Mäkinen is a Finnish former professional ice hockey player who played in the SM-liiga for Ilves and Tappara. He was born on 20 July 1927 in Tampere, Finland. Mäkinen began his career in the SM-liiga in 1947 with Ilves, where he played for four seasons. He then moved to Tappara, where he played for the next seven seasons. During his time with Tappara, Mäkinen won the Finnish championship in 1954 and 1955. Mäkinen was a member of the Finnish national team from 1950 to 1956, and he won a bronze medal at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo. He also won a silver medal at the 1954 World Championships in Stockholm. Mäkinen retired from playing in 1959 and went on to become a coach. He coached Ilves from 1959 to 1962 and then Tappara from 1962 to 1965. He also coached the Finnish national team from 1965 to 1967. Mäkinen was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. He is considered one of the greatest Finnish ice hockey players of all time.
