Kavous Seyed-Emami was an Iranian-Canadian professor of sociology at Imam Sadegh University in Tehran, Iran. He was also the managing director of the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the conservation of Iran's endangered species. Seyed-Emami was born in Tehran, Iran, on 24 December 1953. He received his bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Tehran in 1977 and his master's degree in sociology from the University of Toronto in 1982. He then returned to Iran and began teaching at Imam Sadegh University in Tehran. Seyed-Emami was arrested by Iranian authorities on 24 January 2018 and died in custody on 8 February 2018. Iranian authorities claimed that he had committed suicide, but his family and friends have disputed this claim. Seyed-Emami was a prominent conservationist and had worked to protect endangered species in Iran. He was also a vocal advocate for human rights and democracy in Iran.
