Kenneth Alford was a British composer and conductor of military music. He was born Frederick Joseph Ricketts in London, England, on 21 February 1881. He was educated at the Royal Military School of Music in Kneller Hall, Twickenham, and joined the Royal Marines Band Service in 1899. He was appointed Bandmaster of the Royal Marines in 1924, and was promoted to the rank of Major in 1927. Alford is best known for his marches, including "Colonel Bogey", "The Great Little Army", "The Thin Red Line", and "The Voice of the Guns". He also wrote a number of hymns, including "Eternal Father, Strong to Save", which is often referred to as the "Navy Hymn". Alford retired from the Royal Marines in 1930, and died in 1945. He was posthumously awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1946.
