He attended the University of Toronto, where he studied English and Drama. After graduating, he began working as an editor for the television series The Kids in the Hall. He wrote and edited for the show from 1989 to 1995. Slater has also written and edited for the television series The Newsroom, The Simpsons, and The Daily Show. He has also written and directed several short films, including The Last Supper (1996) and The Big Picture (1998). Slater is currently married to actress and writer Jennifer Irwin. They have two children together.
