He is best known for his children's books, which have been translated into more than 20 languages. He has written over 40 books, including novels, picture books, and plays. He has also written for television and film. Aakeson studied at the Danish School of Journalism and the Danish Film School. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Danish Ministry of Culture's Children's Book Prize, the Nordic Council's Children's and Young People's Literature Prize, and the Hans Christian Andersen Award. Aakeson is married and has two children. He currently lives in Copenhagen.
