On 8 January 2020, Hayes was granted bail after he appeared in court charged in connection with violent disorder relating to an incident which occurred at Denmark Street in Limerick in the early hours of 28 October 2019.
On 31 March 2019, Hayes was selected at centre-forward for Limerick's National League final meeting with Waterford at Croke Park. He collected a winners' medal following the 1-24 to 0-19 victory. On 30 June 2019, Hayes won a Munster Championship medal after scoring 1-02 from centre-forward in Limerick's 2-26 to 2-14 defeat of Tipperary in the final. He ended the year by receiving a second All-Star nomination while he was also shortlisted for a second successive Young Hurler of the Year award.
As a student at the University of Limerick, Hayes immediate became involved in hurling by becoming a member of the university's freshers' team. He missed UL's successful 2018 Fitzgibbon Cup campaign as an ongoing groin injury ruled him out of the team.
On 21 October 2018, Hayes was selected amongst the substitutes when Kildimo-Pallaskenry faced Cappamore in the Limerick Junior Football Championship final. He was introduced as a half-time substitute and ended the game with a winners' medal following the 1-15 to 2-07 victory.
On 19 August 2018, Hayes scored four points from play when Limerick won their first All-Ireland title in 45 years after a 3-16 to 2-18 defeat of Galway in the final. He was later named man of the match. Hayes ended the season by being nominated for an All-Star Award, while he was also named Young Hurler of the Year.
Hayes subsequently joined the Limerick under-21 hurling team and won a Munster Championship medal in his first season after a 0-16 to 1-11 defeat of Cork in the final. On 9 September 2017, Hayes was at centre-back in Limerick's 0-17 to 0-11 defeat of Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. He was later named on the Bord Gáis Energy Team of the Year.
Hayes made his first appearance for the Limerick senior hurling team on 12 February 2017 in a 1-14 to 0-14 defeat by Wexford in the National Hurling League. Later that season he made his first championship appearance, scoring 1-01 from play, in a 3-17 to 2-16 defeat by Clare in the Munster Championship.
Hayes first played for Limerick at minor level in 2015, in a season which ended with a defeat by Galway in the All-Ireland quarter-final. He was eligible for the minor grade once again the following year. On 4 September 2016, Hayes was at full-forward when Limerick were defeated by Tipperary in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park.
